Wedding Traditions - Something Old, New, Borrowed and Blue! Hills in Hollywood
Something Old – This represents the link with the bride’s family and their past. A popular choice is antique jewellery or a handkerchief that has been past down through generations. If you don’t have anything in your family to use, don’t be afraid to start your own traditions. Visit an antique store or go through your mum/grandma’s jewellery collection. Something New – This represents success and good fortune for the bride’s new life with her husband and family – the most popular choice is generally the wedding dress. Something Borrowed – This reminds the bride that family and friends will always be there for her when she needs help – This can be anything you choose, however must be returned for good luck. Something Blue – The colour blue is the symbol of loyalty and faithfulness – The modern choice is a blue garter, however traditionally the bride would tie a small blue ribbon in her hair. www.hillsinhollywood.com |

Bridal Veil History and Meaning - Hills in Hollywood
Veil History and Meaning
The veil symbolizes the virginity, modesty and the innocence of the bride, hence its color, although in some places blue is used as the symbol of the Virgin Mary.
In some Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, the veil was used to completely hide the face of the bride from the groom who had never seen it. Only after the marriage ceremony was the groom allowed to raise the veil to see the face of his new wife for the first time. In Islamic religions the woman must cover her head with a black veil as a sign of respect to the prophet, Muhammad. According to other traditions, for example Roman customs, the veil protected the bride from evil spirits, to whom it was thought she was vulnerable.
The white bridal veil became popular in England in the 16th century just after the medieval period of history had ended. It was at this time, during the reign of that Elizabeth I that the veil became associated with modesty and chastity.
Today, many brides still wear a veil, and when the priest says the line about "you can kiss the bride", the groom lifts the bride’s veil and places it behind the bride's head. In the East today the veil is often still used to cover the face of the bride who the groom has never seen. The veil is usually removed once the marriage ceremony is complete.
Wedding Dress Symbolism and Superstition - Hills In Hollywood
Wedding Dress Symbolism and Superstition
Most brides choose to wear a white wedding dress as a symbol of innocence, purity and traditionally of virginity. But this was not always the case. Before the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe- Coburg in1840, the bride's preference was usually a silver coloured dress. Queen Victoria started the new trend of a pure white dress which continues to the present day in many European countries, the USA and many other countries.
It is true however that every culture interprets the wedding dress colour with a particular meaning. In Western cultures, it is white which is considered to be the colour to symbolize purity, whereas in Islamic countries it is black. In Japan, the predominant colour is red.
It is thought to be bad luck if the bride makes her own dress, or if the groom sees her in her wedding dress before arriving at the ceremony. According to superstition it is also a bad omen to wear a used or borrowed dress.
The bride should not wear the fully-completed dress before the wedding day. Some leave a final adjustment to the dress uncompleted until the last moment to allow for this.

How to Make the Most of Your Wedding Day
Wedding Downtime
It may feel like you’re in the middle of a whirlwind but it’s really important to give yourselves some downtime on your wedding day to really appreciate all that’s going on around you and just spend some time as a couple. Many wedding schedules are back to back, from preparation to ceremony to reception with not a moment in between to reflect and relax.
There are plenty of areas where a little extra time can be added into your day, and it can make a real difference to take this time and savor it – before you know it your day will be over! Here are a few ideas to add some ‘downtime’ into your wedding day:
Pre-wedding – Give yourselves an extra hour or two to get ready before the ceremony. This will give you time to spend with your Bridesmaids, your family and not be in a horrible rush to get to the church on time! It’s very easy to get snappy and short tempered when you have a schedule to keep, so allowing yourself a little extra time to get everything done can work wonders on your mood.
Between the ceremony and reception – Allow for plenty of travel time if they are in separate venues, and provide some ‘mingling’ snacks and drinks for your guests when they arrive. Then you can factor in a little time just for you and your partner to disappear for a while and have an: “oh my goodness we just got married!” moment together. Your guests won’t mind – they’ll be happy chatting and gossiping about how gorgeous you look in your wedding dress…
www.hillsinhollywood.com |
Photos – No matter how many photos you have taken, you’ll always think “oh I wish I’d had one of x and y” after the event! Make sure you get all your family and friends involved and have some special photographic moments with them all. It’s not all about the bridal party – ask your photographer for ideas on how to get everyone involved and your photos will reflect the fact that you’re all having a great time.
After/during the meal – Many brides and grooms are opting for an alternative top table idea – a table for two! This gives you time as a couple to have a more intimate dining experience and reflect on your day so far. And if you’re having more of a traditional seating plan, then why not pencil in some time after the meal/before the speeches for you and your partner to have a few moments alone?
First dance – The first dance is becoming less popular these days, but we think it’s a great opportunity for some closeness and a way to have a quiet moment with your partner after the main wedding events are over. It also gives you the Chance to show off your Beautiful Wedding Dress.
Your wedding night! – There are no rules to say the bride and groom can’t slip off early while the party is in full swing. Chances are all the adrenaline and excitement has exhausted you anyway and you might be glad of an early night, whatever you get up to! You’re provided your guests with entertainment, food, drink and a great time, so don’t feel guilty if you want to reserve some time for you as a couple in the evening.
Wedding days are over all too quickly so make the most of yours and work out some ‘downtime’ in between all the madness and Beautiful fun!

Dress Codes Unlocked - Black Tie - Smart Casual - Formal - White Tie
A wedding invitation is usually received with joy, opened with excitement and then swiftly cast aside to begin the all-important process of deciding what to wear. Most guests will welcome the excuse to rush out and buy a new frock or give their suit its once-a-year airing, but dress codes can be fraught with confusion. Is 'Formal' too formal for your beach celebration? Will 'Smart Casual' encourage the nasty surprise of singlets and thongs in your wedding album? And what exactly constitutes 'Lounge'?
Use this glossary to help put your guests at ease and ensure a stylish celebration.
www.hillsinhollywood.com
White Tie or Ultra Formal
This is great chance for girls to go completely over the top with ballgowns, highly coiffured hair, sky-high heels and lots of sparkle. Men wear a long black tailcoat with white tie, white wing collar dress shirt and vest. Usually suited to celebrations after 6pm.
INSPIRATION: Vintage ball or royal wedding
Black Tie
A Black Tie invitation calls for formal attire. Women can wear cocktail style dresses (but nothing too flashy or revealing), long evening gowns or glamorous evening separates. Men wear tuxedos complete with cufflinks, black socks and shoes but may splash out with a colourful waistcoat or bow tie.
INSPIRATION: Old Hollywood
Black Tie Optional
A Black Tie Optional or Black Tie Invited gives him the option of wearing a tuxedo but it should provide clues as to the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option. She wears a cocktail style or long dress, or evening separates.
Creative Black Tie
Creative Black Tie leaves room for contemporary interpretations of formal wear. She wears a cocktail style or long dress, evening separates or a tailored suit. He can go more modern with a tux and maybe a black shirt, no tie.
INSPIRATION: A charity gala
Daytime/Evening Formal
Similar to Black Tie, but a little more relaxed. During the day, tuxedos are not necessary, unless specified. She might wear a cocktail dress, smart skirt suit, dressy separates or a tailored suit. For evening formal, she may want to go for a longer dress and an elegant evening bag, while he can get away with coloured shirts under suits or a tux with no tie.
INSPIRATION: A night at the theatre
Semi-Formal
Semi-Formal or After Five means that tuxes are not required, nor are long dresses. An evening wedding (after 6pm) would still dictate dark suits for him, and a cocktail dress for her. Daytime semi-formal events mean a suit for him and an appropriate short dress or tailored suit for her. Save the sequins and satin for an evening Cocktail or Formal event.
INSPIRATION: Art gallery opening
Cocktail Attire
Usually for weddings held after 5pm. Cocktail Attire means a shorter, elegant dress for her, usually with a bit of bling, and dark suits for him.
INSPIRATION: Sex and the City
Lounge
A popular choice for slightly less formal weddings, Lounge sits somewhere between Smart Casual and Formal. Shorter cocktail-style dresses or a tailored suit are acceptable for her. A dark coloured business suit is appropriate for him, but he could consider a dressier or more interesting shirt and tie than he might wear to work. Quality knitwear in place of the shirt is acceptable.
INSPIRATION: Race Day
Dressy Casual
Dressy Casual calls for dressed-up versions of casual looks. Tailored pants or dressy separates for her and trousers and a sports coat, for him. Don't be fooled by the word 'Casual' here. Jeans, shorts, T-shirts and other traditionally casual looks are not appropriate.
INSPIRATION: Birthday dinner with the in-laws
Smart Casual
This code shouldn't see everyone regressing to jeans and tees. Women wear dressy separates such as tailored pants or a skirt with a pretty blouse or frocks in natural fabrics - but leave the ballgown at home. Jackets are still are a good idea for him, but perhaps he could try a linen suit, or a sports coat. Popular for more relaxed daytime weddings.
INSPIRATION: Dinner at an upscale restaurant
Resort Casual
For her, think breezy skirts, big hats and nautical themes. For him, consider linen suits or navy jackets and light trousers.
INSPIRATION: An exclusive party on a yacht
Urban Chic
Sophisticated designer wear that you might wear to an upmarket club, bar or restaurant. Ties are not necessary.
INSPIRATION: The opening of a cool new nightclub
Garden Garb
Floral, feminine sundresses and big hats are perfect for this code. Polo shirts and dressy trousers or a lightweight suit for him.
INSPIRATION: Invitation to a Hamptons estate
Beach Chic/Barefoot Beach
Sun dresses and soft, flowing skirts are lovely for a beach wedding. A wrap or cute cardigan is a must in case it's chilly by the water and consider pretty flats or strappy sandals which are easy to take off. For him, jackets and ties are not necessary but a smart-looking shirt and a pair of lightweight trousers are good choices. Brides, if you don't want the boys baring their knees in shorts, consider writing Beach Formal.
INSPIRATION: A celebrity wedding in the Bahamas
Festive Attire
Festive Attire is usually seen during the holidays, with the mood of the party being Informal or Semi-Formal. For her, it means to choose looks with a bit of sparkle.
INSPIRATION: Work Christmas party
Themes
Themed weddings call for dress codes like Vintage Glamour and Black and White, or something specific to the couple's interests such as Medieval. This can be fun for guests, especially like-minded friends who enjoy playing dress-ups. As a courtesy, guests should make an effort to dress smartly and fit with the theme, or speak to the couple about an alternative. Sometimes a trip to the Costume Hire Shop is necessary here.
INSPIRATION: Roaring Twenties/Great Gatsby
Informal
Informal is often interpreted as the same as Casual but it actually a lot more formal than that. Dressy separates for her or Pretty Frocks and blazers or sports jackets are acceptable for him. No jeans.
INSPIRATION: Sunday High Tea
Casual
Generally means "anything goes". Although it allows people to "be themselves" it will mean a real mix of high fashion and comfortable denim on the day - and in the photos.
No Dress Code
In the absence of a specified dress code many guests will contact the best man or maid of honour for advice. Specify something that suits your celebration and save your guests hours of mental anguish deciding what is and isn't appropriate
